Yale Young African Scholars Program

The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program 2024 invites applications, offering a unique blend of academic rigour and leadership development for African secondary school students. If you’re aiming to pursue tertiary education and aspire to be a young leader on the continent, YYAS is your ideal platform. This program is not just an educational experience; it’s an opportunity to join a network of young leaders and gain insights into university admissions and career pathways.

What is the YYAS Program?

YYAS is an intensive program designed to foster academic skills, provide university admissions guidance, and create a network of young leaders across Africa. As a YYAS participant, you’ll receive mentorship throughout your university application process, gaining an edge in your academic journey.

Program Formats and Details

YYAS Workshop (Online)

  • Audience: Open to ~200 students from all African countries.
  • Requirements: Access to Zoom and Canvas on personal devices with reliable internet.
  • Focus: Career exploration, university application preparation, and transitioning from secondary school to university.
  • Commitment: Strict attendance, with no tolerance for absenteeism.
  • Outcome: A PDF YYAS Certificate of Completion, enhancing college and university applications.
  • Cost: Completely free of charge.

YYAS Summit (Residential in Zimbabwe)

  • Audience: Open to ~120 students from all African countries.
  • Location: A residential school campus in Zimbabwe for ten days.
  • Focus: College prep topics, leadership, innovation, design, and 21st-century skills.
  • Commitment: Mandatory full attendance.
  • Outcome: A PDF YYAS Certificate of Completion.
  • Cost: Tuition-free with provided housing, meals, and academic materials.

Travel and Travel Grants

For the YYAS Summit in Zimbabwe:

  • Responsibility: Students must manage travel arrangements to and from Zimbabwe.
  • Travel Grants: Limited need-based grants are available for students living outside Zimbabwe.
  • Self-Funding: Students not receiving travel grants must arrange and fund their own travel.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for YYAS, ensure you meet these requirements:

  • Age: 14-18 years old as of 18 July 2024 (typically ages 16-17).
  • Language: Proficiency in English.
  • Citizenship: African citizenship or permanent residency.
  • School Location: Attendance at a school in Africa.
  • Grade Level: Current 10th or 11th-grade student (or international equivalent).
  • Graduation Date: Graduating secondary school between May/June 2025 and June 2026 (Northern Hemisphere) or November/December 2024 and December 2025 (Southern Hemisphere).
